Understanding The Types Of Hernias And Surgical Repair Options

Blog

If you've experienced a hernia, you may already know that surgical repair is often the only solution. But there are lots of different types of hernias, and not all surgeries are alike.

It's important to understand your particular hernia so that you can make a decision about the best course of action.

Types of Hernias

Generally, there are five types of hernias. The inguinal hernia is the most common, and it occurs in the groin. Femoral hernias are less common and occur lower down in the groin, near the thigh.

Incisional hernias form at surgical incision sites, and umbilical hernias appear around the navel. Hiatal hernias appear in the upper stomach area.

Hernias have different causes and symptoms, so it is important to discuss all of these with your doctor to ensure that you are making an informed decision for your well-being.

Surgical Repair Options for Hernias

The type of surgical repair you choose will depend on the type of hernia you have.

For inguinal and femoral hernias, open surgery is usually recommended. During this type of procedure, a surgeon makes an incision in the groin or abdominal area and pushes the hernia back into place, often with sutures or mesh.

Some doctors recommend laparoscopic repair. This procedure is done with a small camera and special instruments, inserted through a few tiny incisions. Robotic repair is another type of laparoscopic surgery.

In some cases, doctors decide to monitor the hernia over time to make sure it isn't getting worse. This is sometimes done with umbilical or hiatal hernias when surgery is not immediately necessary.

Many Factors Influence Surgical Repair Options

A variety of factors influence the choice of hernia repair. Your age, general health, and the size and location of the hernia all play a role in determining the best course for repair.

Your doctor will also take into account any other medical conditions you may have, and the potential risks associated with your particular hernia. Your doctor will also ask about your personal goals and preferred outcomes.

Meet With a Doctor to Discuss Hernia Repair Options

If you have a hernia, it's important to discuss your treatment options with a doctor. Depending on the type and severity of your hernia, surgery may be the best option.

Your doctor can help you understand the types of hernias and surgical repair options so that you can make an informed decision about your treatment.

learning how to tend to sick and injured kids

My name is Dan and this is my blog. I am a recently singled father of three that is learning everything about caring for my kids as I go along. Before my wife passed, she was the one that took care of the kids when they were sick or injured, so I had a lot of learning to do and I had to do it as quickly as possible. I got together with some of the parents from my kids' school and they helped out quite a bit. I created my blog for two reasons - to keep my facts straight and to help other parents learn what I have struggled to learn.
